The Ministry of Education intends to reduce the number of teaching hours of the subject Biology and Geology of 3rd ESO from 3 to 2 hours per week
The proposal is a serious blow to Biology and Geology teachers, who have already seen their working hours reduced by the disappearance of the natural sciences subject in 2nd year of ESO.
The College of Geologists and the College of Biologists are committed to reinforcing training in a subject that is essential for the scientific literacy of students.
The Illustrious Official College of Geologists (ICOG) and the General Council of Official Colleges of Biologists (CGCOB) ask the Ministry of Education of the Community of Madrid to reconsider its intention to reduce the teaching hours of the subject from 3 to 2 hours per week of Biology and Geology of 3º of ESO.
The presidents of the ICOG, Manuel Regueiro, and the CGCOB, Eduardo Morán, stress that 3rd year of ESO is the course in which students learn about the external geodynamics of the planet, the anatomy and physiology of the human body, and healthy lifestyles , “so its contents are fundamental for scientific literacy and for health education”.
Both institutions also emphasize that the proposal of the Ministry of Education of the Community of Madrid is a very hard blow for Biology and Geology teachers, who have already seen their working hours reduced after the disappearance of the subject of Natural Sciences in 2nd year of ESO.
“The decision of the Community of Madrid represents a new outrage to the scientific training of Madrid students”, regrets the president of the General Council of Official Biologists Associations, Eduardo Morán. For his part, the president of the College of Geologists, Manuel Regueiro, stresses that this proposal “shocks a lot in a context like the current one, in which so much importance has been given to science to fight threats such as the Covid pandemic, resource scarcity or climate change”.
